Afghan Rulers Used Left-Behind British Equipment to Track Down Local Nationals That Served Alongside Western Troops, Inquiry Hears
A whistleblower has told an official investigation that the UK left behind classified equipment allowing the Taliban to identify local individuals who worked with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk
The source, known as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the information breach were instructed to move homes and switch their contact details to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's response of a massive breach of personal details concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to relocate to the United Kingdom to escape the regime.
The Information Breach Was Discovered
An electronic document including private information, such as identities, addresses and sometimes relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker working at special operations center in last year.
The breach became known only in August 2023, when details of nine people who had applied to settle in the UK appeared on Facebook.
Taliban Capabilities
“There seems to be a false assumption that the Taliban lack the same sort of facilities that we have,” Person A informed MPs.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire a contact number, they can trace your precise location. That is what the unit did.”
When questioned about regarding if authorities had access to sophisticated technology, the source confirmed: “They have complete capability.”
Aftermath of the Data Breach
Early investigations provided to the investigation suggested that at least 49 kin and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been executed.
A gag order regarding the leak was implemented in last year and blocked any information concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.
Protective Actions
Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.
“We advised that they change residence if they could and altered their phone numbers. Those were the primary information that, should militant forces had access to these details, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.
Contested Findings
The whistleblower disputed that government assessment performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the records by the regime was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.
“The crucial point is that these individuals are not confronting the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to past work history.”
Person A described horrific treatment experienced by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.
“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
