Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Rebuke
Individuals from across the political divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
“What a appalling and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Party
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his party to defend the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
