Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
