Monarch to Deliver Personal Address on Illness in TV Programme
His Majesty has filmed a first-hand account about his battle with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's annual cancer awareness initiative, run by Cancer Research UK and a major network.
Buckingham Palace said the King would talk about his "recovery journey" as a individual battling cancer, in a televised statement on this Friday at 8pm UK time.
The address, recorded at a royal residence recently, will highlight the critical nature of preventative health checks to ensure more people diagnose the condition at an early stage.
This constitutes a rare update on the wellbeing of the Monarch, who has been receiving ongoing care since his condition was announced in early last year. But it is thought improbable the King will disclose his type of cancer.
Fundraising Core Mission
The annual charity initiative each year raises funds for medical research and therapies and prompts people to get screenings to improve the probability of an timely detection.
The King's candid approach about his condition, and managing the disease, has been designed to increase understanding and to encourage more people to get screened - and this will be escalated with this unique royal involvement.
So far the King's main approach to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, upholding a busy schedule despite his ongoing course of treatment, and he is understood not to have sought to be characterised by his illness.
This year has seen the King, 77, taking several overseas trips, notably to Italy and Canada, and receiving the largest volume of foreign dignitaries to the UK for decades, which included the German president recently.
The Televised Broadcast Event
This Friday's awareness programme on television, featuring well-known figures including several TV personalities, will appeal to people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.
All three have been personally touched by cancer - one host disclosed in November she had undergone surgery for breast cancer, while Balding was diagnosed with a thyroid condition over a decade ago. Comedian Adam Hills has previously mentioned his father, who had one form of cancer and then later another illness.
The broadcast will reach out to the approximate millions of people in the UK who charities state are not up to date with NHS screening schemes, with an digital tool to let people check if they are able for screenings for key health indicators.
In an effort to clarify cancer checks and illustrate the value of early diagnosis there will be a live broadcast from hospital departments at medical facilities in Cambridge.
"My aim is to take the fear from cancer screening and show all people that they are not on their own in this," stated Davina McCall.
Available National Services
Right now in the UK, there are three NHS cancer screening programmes - for major health concerns - available to eligible individuals.
A new scheme for lung health is also being slowly rolled out for people at increased risk of being diagnosed with the illness, focusing on people aged 55-74 years old, who are smokers or used to.
Male patients may discuss specific tests, but there is not a universal scheme in place.
Ongoing Efforts
The fundraising campaign, which has generated a significant sum since 2012, is financing multiple research studies with 13,000 patients.
The Monarch, in a statement for dignitaries at a reception for related organisations in earlier this year, had referred to acknowledging the "daunting and at times alarming reality" for those diagnosed and their loved ones.
But he stated his first-hand encounter of living with cancer had revealed that "periods of great challenge of illness can be illuminated by the kindness of others," as he praised those who supported cancer patients.
Official sources has not revealed the nature of cancer the King has, or what treatment he has received. The King's cancer was discovered subsequent to he had undergone a routine operation.
