New York's next mayor affirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, did not confirm he would live there right away after his victory in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
In his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
But his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his modest Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
