The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
